Jamie Owens makes a beautiful skateboarding magazine & I'm not just saying that because he rarely denies my random ideas.
Whether I have a piece in the mag or not, it's a joy when Closer shows up in my mailbox. Closer has become a home for the ideas I have that might seem niche but Jamie "gets it." Who else would devote valuable pages to an article about the history of a hunk of metal in Boston?
"We wanted it to be free from the constraints that were imposed by our previous publisher but also free from the ‘conventions’ adopted by skateboard magazines in the past." — Arthur Derrien
Sam Ashley, Arthur Derrien, and Will Harmon were working at a corpo skate mag and things got sketchy. They could have ridden it out but instead, in 2015 they got together to start Free. I love that & I'm hyped to have worked on this piece with Free, Pep Kim & Chrystie NYC.
Size matters. Greatest leverages a larger format to tell big stories with nice photography and design. The editorial looks lovely on their app as well.
"Today is the greatest day I've ever known." - Billy Pumpkin 1993.
The first piece I wrote for Greatest was with Eric Elms (designer & founder of Powers). Elms named his brand after a street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn where I used to live. Also, with former Alien Workshop/Chocolate pro Anthony Pappalardo lived a few blocks down from me on Powers. That's a crazy one, right?

The second cover story of my career. When I saw the magazine on the racks of one of those magazine/smoke shops in the West Village it felt awesome, so I got a slice & bought some records.
I've written a solid amount of pieces for High Snobiety but this cover feature with Lucien Clarke was memorable because my TapeACall Pro app was fucked. This also happened when I interviewed Ray Barbee. Luckily, Lucien is a very nice person and clarified the bits of audio I couldn't make out. I did this interview on a hollow sidewalk on Bleeker Street. Seriously, look it up! Some of my favorite High Snob pieces have vanished from the World Wide Web but peep the links below while they're still active.

I had a nice run with this magazine but most importantly, each of these conversations taught me a lot about what I didn't know. I'm still learning & don't plan on stopping because that's weird.
Writing for Huck Magazine was intimidating at first because it felt kind of highbrow. The editors were very "proper" in their correspondence and it reminded me that Americans can sound pretty budget.
I got my first-ever cover story with this UK-based periodical and it was also the first time I ever really "pushed" to make something happen. I'm sorry if I was a punisher Huck Magazine.

The "Bible" of skateboarding. That's not up for debate. I wouldn't be making this website if it wasn't for Thrasher, specifically the writing of Pushead & Mike Gitter.
